Screen Play
Writing K.Ramanathan CHAPTER
4 VARIOUS
STAGES OF FILM PRODUCTION Actually film production can be broadly divided into three stages and they are the pre production, production and post production stages. Selection of the story, preparation of the screen play, are the two major steps , from among those listed earlier, that fall in the pre production stage of film making. Filming or picturisation of the screen play, which is really the starting point of transforming the screen play into film, consists of shooting ( a common word, which you must surely be aware of ) the film, during which step the professionals connected with photography, audio recording play an active part and this is followed by the editing of the film. The final stage of the film making viz. Post production comprises of adding music and other visual and audio effects to the film. In some cases it is at this stage that the film is dubbed, when dialogues, which could not be recorded earlier at the time of shooting, is added. There are many reasons for this dubbing becoming necessary, but that is not of much relevance to the screen play writer. (However some details are furnished about all the steps of film making in the Appendix, just for reference for those who are interested to know more about film making.) Of course
there are few other professionals, who are also actively involved in the
production of a film. They are the
Art director and Make up artiste.. Their designation or profession amply
explains their roles in the film. The
art director is the person, responsible for the design and erection of
sets, that may be needed and the make up artiste takes care of the looks of the
artists, irrespective of whether they are normal or special. You may still wonder why we have not said anything about the director of the film and at which stage does he play an active part. The truth is that the director is connected with the film, right from the beginning and he not only takes part in all the stages of activities, but also has the final say in the matter. Well that’s what the CEO is expected to do, isn’t it? POINTS TO REMEMBER 1. Broadly
there are three stages of film production.
They are pre production, production and post production 2. Pre production stage ; Selection of the story Preparation of the screen play. Production : Picturisation ( filming or shooting), Sound recording
