RAMANATHAN
After
graduating from Loyola College of Madras University with B.Sc, Ramanathan
joined Institute of Film Technology, Madras (in 1960) (Now known as Film
& TV Institute of Tamilnadu) and earned a first class Diploma on Film
Technology - D.F.T.- with specialisation in Cinematography. Soon after he joined
M/s Gemini Color Lab., Madras as an apprentice and worked for six moths and
moved to Films Division of Govt. of India, Bombay. In 1965 he joined as Lecturer in Cinematography in Film Institute of India, Poona Now known as Film & TV Institute of India), a premiere film school in South East Asia. The duties
included teaching the principles and practice of photography and Motion Picture
Photography, guiding the students in their film projects and taking part in
staff film production. During his tenure here he
photographed a number of films made by the staff and also scripted and directed
four short films. In 1975 he joined M/s Hindustan Photo films Mfg. Co. Ltd as a Technical Officer (cine) in Bombay and rose up to the level of Deputy Manager (Sales) and in charge of the company's newly opened Hyderabad branch. After stints in M/s Hindustan Photo Films Mfg. Co. Ltd, he set up the unit Hilighters in Madras in 1985. Soon after the unit was set up, Hilighters made three short tele films in Tamil which were telecast from Doordarshan Kendra, Madras and two Hindi series, which were telecast from DDK Delhi. He also has done short films for Suprabath , a programme based on music featuring popular musicians, telecast by Doordarshan on it national network in the mornings. He has also done films for other TV channels like Sun TV, Jain TV and Vijay TV. Ramanathan has scripted and directed a number of corporate and industrial films, most of which he photographed. number of films for Danida, engaged in rural
development projects in Tamilnadu and Karnataka. They are all motivational films
in nature and Danida was very pleased with the films as they helped them achieve
their goal of rural sanitation. Presently Ramanathan is Danida's
Communication Consultant. Ramanathan is writing a book on Screen Play writing. The book will serve as a detailed guide for aspiring screen play writers.
