DOCUMENTARIES 

HILIGHTERS is an accredited producer for Doordarshan in the category of documentary.

Most of the documentaries and short films produced by HILIGHTERS have been telecast from various stations of Doordarshan. The other TV networks for whom we have been making short films are - Jain TV and Zee TV.  In addition we have also been making short films for other clients, such as  UTV, Singapore Airlines, TV AM and Danida - Danish International Development Agency of Govt. of Denmark.

Structure and Style

We adopt a different structure and style for individual documentaries and short films. This depends on the subject and the target viewers. We strongly believe that every film is for some specific purpose and is aimed at specific audience. We therefore design the films taking into consideration these two important points. We do make the films interesting even when it is aimed at a less literate viewers, but take care not to make the film too artistic, which may win us awards without achieving the purpose for which the film was made.
The judicious combination of creativity and purpose is what makes HILIGHTERS sphere of activity The good example of this work is the films we did for Danida which appealed to the illiterate villagers and also won appreciation from the planners in world forums like WHO, UNICEF and some universities .

DOCUMENTARIES

Crowning Glories                          English         DDK, Delhi  

This is a film on the democratic process of electing a government in Nepal. This process was reintroduced after a gap of nearly thirty years and therefore DD wanted a film on the subject and we were assigned the job. This film was appreciated in Nepal.

These two documentaries were for DD and made on the occasion of the golden jubilee celebration of India's Independence. As desired by DD these ate straight forward narrative type documentaries.
Face in the Crowd
Three films, #1 to #3  were made for 'Face in the Crowd' category, which were telecast on the national network from DDK, Delhi. The film #4  was telecast on the national networks, slot TV-AM, 
while the film  #5 was made exclusively for Ministry of Environment. This was also telecast on the national network.
#1 Dr.(Ms) Lakshmi Vijayakumar      Psychiatrist and founder of 'Sneha' - a voluntary organisation to help prevent suicides. #2 Laurie Baker   Architect who specialises in low cost housing and winner of the prestigious 'Habitat' award.
#3 Ms.Uma Narayan   A social worker who founded the branch of SOS village for rehabilitation of orphans and destitute women.

#4 Rajastani artisans    Displaced by drought from Rajastan, these men and women brave poverty and practice the art of making toys in plaster of Paris and eke out a living selling them in a region where they do not even low the language. 

#5 Water   Film on the need for conservation of water made for the Ministry of Environment, Govt. of India 

 

Sethu                                          Hindi            DDK,Delhi

Sethu as the title implies is about a language that can be a bridge between people and cultures. Basically the film is on the Hindi language and how it has been accepted by people all over the country as a link language. The film was shot in Madras, to give authentication to the fact that Hindi is accepted as a language in the south. 

 
DEIVIKA NERAM           

This 20 part series was telecast on Vijay TV. This is a series of documentaries on the temples of Tamilnadu and dealt at length on the architecture of the temples and also the principle behind the type of architecture chosen for the temple. It also elaborated on the legends connected with the temple. 

SHORT FILMS

All women police station

Exploitation of women in kidney donation  

These two short films, each of 5 minutes duration was made for TV AM, and were later telecast on Doordarshan, Delhi as part of the series 'The status of women in India' The films depict two contrasting status of women.

Four quickies for Art & Culture section of THE NEWS, DDK,Delhi.

Solar energy   (Solar Cooker)

This short film on tapping and using solar energy for ordinary household requirements like hot water and cooking was done for Jain TV 

 

Films for Singapore Airlines

We made the following two short films for Singapore Airlines. The films are of 7 minutes duration and are being shown in Singapore Airlines in flight to give a glimpse of the important places in the arriving point.

Educational film

Teaching Mathematics – the new way - film  for DPEP, Directorate of Primary Education Pogramme,
through IGNOU,Delhi.- Indira Gandhi National Open University. We made four films for the client.

This is a training film for trainers. The film featured real  life teachers  and students. We avoided the 'take it from me' attitude , instead preferred to have real interactions between the trainers and trainees for the film. This helped us in conveying the message very clearly.  When this film was shown on satellite TV for teachers from around the country and discussed through video conferencing,  almost all of them felt that it tells them more in less time and is far effective,. It also generated exchange of ideas, which was one of the additional purpose of the film.  

Though Ramanathan had been associated with the production of training film from his days in Film Institute days this is the first film for an open university and we are confident that we will be doing more of such films. Now we will be making a number of films for the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, which has started an exclusive educational channel. To begin with we will be making films for graduate level engineering courses.
